The University of Cambridge Local
Examinations Syndicate, UCLES, now Cambridge Assessment, is still
insisting that it cannot release the 1961 West African School
Certificate, WASC, results of the APC candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.
However, it put up a new post on its website which aligns with the result released by Buhari’s alma-mater in Katsina.
It confirmed that result grades for the
examination in 1961 was indeed issued in numbers, not letters, as
suggested by critics of Buhari. Buhari’s critics claimed that results
were issued in letters. However Cambridge said, “Examination results
were classed in grades from 1 to 9.
“1, 2,3,4,5 & 6 indicate a Pass with Credit; 7 & 8 indicate a Pass; 9 indicate a Failure,” the school said.
Cambridge also said that in 1961, a
candidate was deemed as qualified for its certificate if he made a pass
in English but not necessarily in Mathematics. Buhari failed in
Mathematics but had credits in English, Geography, Health Science, and
Hausa Language. He got a pass in Literature in English.
“To pass the School Certificate,
candidates had to pass examinations in a variety of groups. It was
compulsory to pass English Language, but not Maths, in order to gain the
Certificate,” the university said.
On whether Hausa language was offered as
a subject in 1961, the university said that it was. It disclosed that
according to the Regulations for 1961, African Language papers,
including those for Hausa, were set for the West African School
Certificate.
In 1961, 152 candidates sat for the WASC Hausa examination.
“Our records show that Hausa was set in the Northern Region in 1961,” Cambridge said.
Cambridge University posts update on Buhari’s result and it supports Buhari’s claims
