Danfo Driver Beats Wife To Coma For Refusing To Bear More Children After 3 Kids

An Apapa Magistrate’s Court sitting in Lagos state on Friday remanded one James Obinna, a driver of commercial bus (better known as Danfo) in prison for allegedly beating his wife, Ebere to coma over claims that she refused to bear more children after having three kids.

The victim, a street hawker, had refused to get pregnant for her husband again after three kids.

According to her, the harsh economic situation does not warrant having many children that they cannot adequately cater for.

Obinna, who hails from Enugu state, was said to taken offence at her insistence and pounced on her.

The incident reportedly happened at 26 Babatunde street, Olodi Apapa, where the couple resides.

Obinna, who could not provide the basic necessities of life for his family, forced his wife to resort to street hawking to support his meagre income in taking care of the family.

Despite that, he had been on her neck to have more children, but she rejected and in an attempt to forcefully have sex with her, Ebere reportedly fled their apartment in the middle of the night.

In anger, her husband chased her and held her on the street, forcing her to return to their apartment but she resisted him. Afterwards, he reportedly descended on her and brutally battered her, throwing her into a gutter leaving her badly bruised and injured.

But for the intervention of the residents who rescued the victim and took her to a hospital for treatment, Ebere would have allegedly died.

Concerned residents were said to have called the police who got Obinna arrested.

At the station, the police reportedly asked him to apologize to his wife and take care of her medical bill but he stoutly refused.

Subsequently, the police charged him to court with assault and occasional harm.

Obinna pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr. T. Abolarinwa, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000, with one surety in like sum.

Abolarinwa ordered that he be remanded in the Kirikiri prison pending perfection of his bail condition.

The case was then adjourned till May 11.
