It is not the best of times for Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) president, Ibinabo Fiberesima following an Appeal Court judgement yesterday upholding an earlier 5-year jail term handed to the actress.
Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur upheld the judgement of Justice Deborah Oluwayemi of the Lagos High Court which sentenced Ibinabo to 5 years imprisonment without option of fine.
With her appeal hitting the rocks, the embattled mother of 3 however has a final hope, the Supreme Court, which is Nigeria’s highest court of law.
A Lagos-based lawyer Efe Ugboro, tells Nigerian Entertainment Today, ‘ She can only escape if the Supreme Court gives a different judgement. She has the right to appeal the judgement up to the supreme court’.
Already Ibinabo’s lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechin has made it clear that they are moving to the apex court as the drama continues on whether the ex-beauty queen will end up in jail.
Trouble started for the movie star 10 years ago when she hit a Lagos doctor, Suraj Giwa with her car which resulted to his death. The trial, which has been heard at various lower courts, has seen the actress, who was once sentenced to a 5 year jail term with an option of N100,000 fine by a Magistrate Court, had her fine option removed by a High Court for dangerous and reckless driving. The fine option removal has now been affirmed by the Appeal Court which also upheld the jugdement of Justice Deborah Oluwayemi sending her to 5 years in prison.
Ibinabo Fiberesima’s last hope is now the Supreme Court.
‘There is really no way to escape jail term. Except you appeal the judgement and the appellate court sets aside the judgement/sentence of the lower court’, another lawyer, Lola Abdul also reiterated.
