Kendrick Lamar didn’t win 5 Grammy Awards by sagging his pants – Emma Ugolee writes

We were desperate as a nation for the support of the international community.

The average Nigerian could tell our economic need for cordial trade partnerships with the West who patronised us and could grant us loans. For the suffering going on, Nigerians would avoid the word ‘sanctions‘ at all cost.

Buhari had this at the back of his mind as he made his first trip to America . Obama, the poster boy for gay rights, traditionally pointed out one of his concerns. 14 years sentence for being gay in Nigeria. ‘How would you change that?’ Obama wanted to know.

Breaths held as Buhari was about to release his response.

And he drops it.

‘It is against our culture, it is against our traditions and it is against our religions. Our laws stand as they are. It cannot be condoned’.

Wow! Did he just realize the implication of that resolute public stand?

He absolutely did but would not sacrifice what he believed in for approval at these quarters nor be pressured to shift that principle by the ever-growing popularity of the topic. His reasons were solid and his stand was clear

What determines where you stand on issues? Fear? Favor? Public acceptance? Is your affiliation with the truth dependent on convinience and derivable benefits?

With the debased and content free but massively accepted topics of sex, drugs and money in rap music making money for band wagoners in the rap game, Kendrick Lemar stuck his neck out to make a rap record called ‘To pimp a butterfly‘, that addressed the traditional core values that gave birth to rap music e.g The life of a black man in white America.

#GRAMMY2016: How Kendrick Lamar won 5 Grammy Awards

Kendrick didn’t score big with the pant sagging, blunt smoking lads in the club but he went home with 5 Grammy Awards last night including ‘Rap Album of the Year’ because by UNpopular demand he stood for his beliefs.

Are your balls ready to take an informed unpopular stand for your beliefs?

A man who spent his whole life not standing for something, I always say, spent it falling for anything.
