Lady Gaga sang her heart out on stage at the Academy Awards Sunday night as she performed her nominated song ‘Til It Happens To You’.
According to Dailymail, she received a standing ovation from the stars gathered inside the Kodak Theatre, some of whom were moved to tears by the haunting track about how it feels to be a victim of rape.
And beleaguered singer Kesha immediately tweeted her thanks to Gaga, and Vice President Joe Biden who introduced her, for ‘bringing attention to sexual assault at the Oscars.’
Kesha, who just lost a legal bid to be released from the Sony contract that requires her to work with producer Dr. Luke, added: ‘It hit very close to my heart for obvious reasons.’
The track was co-written by Gaga and Diane Warren for the documentary ‘The Hunting Ground’ that explored the issue of rape and sexual assault on college campuses in America.
Ahead of her appearance on the live telecast, the 29-year-old – real name Stefani Germanotti – had made it clear that Kesha would be on her mind as she performed ‘Til It Happens To You’.
Gaga, 29, who has said she herself is a survivor of sexual violence, delivered the haunting song accompanying herself on a white grand piano.
At times, she appeared agitated, at others tearful as she powered through the heartfelt ballad that tries to communicate how someone who has been violated feels following the abuse.
