Just in case anyone was wondering, the All Progressives Congress Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) has decided that it would ignore the yearnings of most Nigerians for a debate between the two leading candidates in the ongoing race for the presidency and keep its candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, away from the debate podium this campaign season.
In a statement released by its director
of media and publicity, Garba Shehu, the party said that instead of
debates, Buhari will embark on one-on-one interactions with the
electorate in town hall meetings that will take place in several cities
across the nation. In fact, the first of the town hall meetings took
place in Lagos today where Buhari met with members of the Organised
Private Sector.
The APC statement described its strategy
as a “deliberate” one which will see Buhari, and his running mate, Yemi
Osinbajo, “interact and explain directly to citizens the policy thrust
of their envisaged administration and how the set objectives will be
achieved.” It described the town hall meetings as “more pressing”.
Apart from Lagos, other places where the
APC town hall meetings will take place include Kano, where Buhari will
interact with traders and market associations; Benin, where he will
interact with labour and civil society leaders; Ibadan where he will
interact with students and youth groups; Enugu; and Port Harcourt.
“The direction the that the campaign
will be moving in the countdown to the election day is to have as many
as possible person-to-person interactive sessions for Nigerians to hear
directly from the presidential candidate and his running mate,” Shehu
said.
