Photos: Rio Olympics in chaos as security chief is attacked & robbed, fans collapse from heat, stadium seats empty

Chaos reigned supreme at the Rio Olympics yesterday after the Games security chief Felipe Seixas was attacked by four knife-men as he left the games centre some hours after the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro boasted that Rio was the 'safest city in the world'.

Fans were forced to retreat from match venues after collapsing under the hot sun while Portugal’s Education Minister was attacked and robbed at knife-point as he headed to his hotel after watching cycling.
There was more embarrassment for organizers of the tournament as two-thirds of the seats for the Brazilian team’s opening beach volleyball game were empty, with the few who were present pictured fiddling with their mobile phones during the games.
Organizers had expected a sell-out at the 12,000-capacity stadium — but just 4,400 spectators turned up for Brazil’s opening beach volleyball match against Russia on the Copacabana.
