AFCON 2017: NFF plans legal action against CAF, may take them to CAS

The Nigerian Football Federation is considering taking the Confederation of African Football, Africa's football governing body, to the Court of Arbitration for Sports after the ouster of the Super Eagles from AFCON 2017 after losing 1-0 to Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday, making it their second successive Afcon miss in two years.

The early exit was facilitated by the sudden withdrawal of Chad from the qualification campaign, leaving Group G with just one qualification spot and no option of best losers, and the NFF feels CAF had the power to stop CHAD from withdrawing or at best provide the qualification group with another country.

As a result, the under-fire NFF executive committee led by President Amaju Pinnick is considering measures to seek redress by dragging Caf to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).
“It is rather unfortunate that Chad, one of the teams in the qualification group, suddenly pulled out of the race, leaving only three teams left in the group, and only the winner of the the group guaranteed qualification. This appeared to have taken away our worst–case scenario of qualification. However, our legal unit is looking at the propriety of changing the rules midstream’’, NFF Assistant Director of Communications Demola Olajire told newsmen.
CAS is an independent institution, based in Lausanne, Switzerland involved in resolving legal disputes in the field of sport.

Nigerians forgive us, the god of soccer did not smile on us- NFF boss Amaju Pinnick

The president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has called on soccer loving Nigerians to forgive the Super Eagles and the NFF after Nigeria missed out on AFCON 2017 qualification for the second time in two years following last night's loss to Egypt in Alexandria.

The draw for Russia 2018 World Cup will be conducted in June with the qualifying tournament to begin in October. Amaju says Nigerians should shift their focus to the World Cup qualification campaign.

“We are all disappointed we did qualify (for AFCON 2017),” said Pinnick to footballlive.ng “The god of soccer did not smile on us. I believe Nigerians should forgive us for us to move on. The focus now is to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. We will keep the Eagles busy during the FIFA friendly windows ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.”

18yr old Man U. hero Marcus Rashford to get new salary increase from £500 to £15,000 per week

Marcus Rashford, Manchester United's star of the moment, who on his first match for the club, scored two goals in a must win Europa league clash and has scored important goals against Arsenal and Man-city while still going for his Chemistry and Biology exams in between training, is now set to receive a new contract worth £15,000 per week.

The boy who has been playing for Man U since he was 10, is currently on a meagre £500 per week salary despite scoring 5 goals in just 8 appearances, a good record seeing that just over a month ago he was playing for the club's academy and wouldn't have played if not for injury to Wayne Rooney.

According to The Sun, Rashford could now put pen to paper on his new deal in the coming weeks as United bid to ease the growing hype around their young sensation.

The new deal would mean that the 18-year-old would earn over 30 times his current wage. Rashford's performances also mean that he has enjoyed a better start to his career than Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Wayne Rooney, no wonder the immense hype towards this talented player.

Euro 2016 matches this summer 'could be played behind closed doors without spectators because of terrorism' - UEFA

UEFA bosses are considering closing stadiums from fans this summer in France as the world is still coming to terms from the shock of the Paris Terror attack in the Stade de France last year and most recently the Brussels airport attack that gulped 34 lives.

The EURO 2016 Tournament which is the biggest football tournament for European nations, will be held across 10 stadiums in 10 cities in France with the capacity of the smallest stadium being 33,000 while the largest being 81,000 (Stade de France) making it an easy target for terrorists attack.

With the tournament barely 3 months away, UEFA executive committee vice-president Giancarlo Abete has admitted the best option could be to play the matches behind closed doors.
'Euro 2016 is the kind of event we can't delay or postpone.' Abete told French radio station Radio 24. We can't exclude the possibility of playing behind closed doors as we cannot exclude terrorism.'
In a statement, UEFA said:
'We will continue their joint work and will regularly monitor the level of risk for the tournament and their respective organisational plans. 'For over three years now, EURO 2016 SAS has been working closely with the relevant authorities to develop the most appropriate mechanisms in order to guarantee a safe and secure tournament and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that is the case for all involved.' France's interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve was keen to stress adequate security measures have been put in place.
'The events in Brussels remind us of the very high level of security which is necessary to ensure Euro 2016 is successful,' said Cazeneuve, who at a press conference said the government would contribute £1.5million for CCTV projects to cover fan zones during the tournament.
'Euro 2016 must combine sportsmanship, festivity and security for the teams, coaches and fan. It is 80 days to the start of Euro 2016 and the organisers, cities and state services are fully mobilised. 'Euro 2016 should be a celebration but collective security is an obligation for everyone alongside the government.'
