Sunday Oliseh shares thoughts on issues with NFF, says neither he nor NFF can afford for him to live in Nigeria

Veteran sports journalist, Colin Udoh hosted a discussion with Sunday Oliseh, current coach of the Nigerian Senior National Football team this morning at the SocialMediaWeek, Lagos event. He talked on a host of topics ranging from players' use of social media to discussing on the NFF, fans and his preparation for the AFCON double header match against Egypt.

Emmanuel Emenike, new coach of the Under 21 team was also in attendance at the event. Oliseh spoke via Skype from his base in Belgium. Colin Udoh live tweeted the exchanges. More after the cut..

Sunday Oliseh shuns NFF Technical committee meeting

The Nigerian Football Federation Technical committee had planned a meeting with coach Sunday Oliseh on Friday in Abuja, but the Delta state born tactician snubbed the meeting citing 'travel reasons' according to reports.

The NFF technical committee had summoned Oliseh to a meeting today to explain his choice of players and planned tactics ahead of Nigeria's must win AFCON Qualifier next month, but the coach says he will be traveling to London this weekend on a scouting mission so can't meet the committee.

This might cause more problems between the coach and the NFF after he reportedly told the technical body that he wasn't answerable to them and earlier criticized the NFF for not motivating the players enough by paying them their salaries and allowances.

The NFF Technical committee is made up of respected football figures like Christian Chukwu, Paul Bassey, Victor Ikpeba, Mutiu Adepoju and Garba Lawal.

FIFA Appeal Committee reduce football bans of Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini to 6 years, order them to pay fine.

The FIFA Appeal Committee today rejected the appeals of Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini to have their 8 year ban from football by the FIFA independent committee overturned. Instead they reduced their football ban from 8 years to 6 years and ordered both of them to pay CHF 50,000 and CHF 80,000 respectively within 30 days.

In December last year, the adjudicatory chamber of the FIFA Independent Ethics Committee banned former FIFA president Sepp Blatter and former UEFA President Michel Platini for 8 years after they were both found to illegally conduct financial transactions without official records, hence both men's decision to take their appeal to the FIFA Appeal Committee.

See the FIFA Appeal Committee's full press statement below...
''The FIFA Appeal Committee, chaired by Larry Mussenden (Bermuda), has partially confirmed the decisions taken by the adjudicatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee on 17 and 18 December 2015 regarding Joseph S. Blatter and Michel Platini respectively, whose bans have been reduced from eight to six years.''
Following the hearings of Mr Platini and Mr Blatter held in Zurich on 15 and 16 February 2016 respectively, the Appeal Committee has decided as follows: ''Mr Platini’s and Mr Blatter’s appeals are dismissed in respect of infringements of art. 13 (General rules of conduct), art. 15 (Loyalty), art. 19 (Conflict of interests) and art. 20 (Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits) of the FIFA Code of Ethics, as established by the adjudicatory chamber.''
"The Appeal Committee concurred with the findings of the adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee in the sense that the evidence available in the present case is not sufficient to establish a breach of article 21 of the FIFA Code of Ethics (Bribery and corruption). Consequently, the appeal lodged by the investigatory chamber for a life ban from all football-related activity was also dismissed.''
"'While agreeing with the principles and arguments presented by the adjudicatory chamber in its calculation of the sanction, the Appeal Committee determined that some strong mitigating factors for Mr Platini and Mr Blatter were not taken into account when establishing the sanction. In this sense, amongst others, the Appeal Committee considered that Mr Platini’s and Mr Blatter’s activities and the services they had rendered to FIFA, UEFA and football in general over the years should deserve appropriate recognition as a mitigating factor.''
"'Thus, after carefully analysing and taking into consideration the exceptional mitigating circumstances of the cases, it was determined that a one-year reduction of the five-year ban for a breach of art. 20 of the FCE was proper, and similarly a one-year reduction of the three-year ban for the other breaches was also proper.'' In summary: ''Michel Platini is banned from taking part in any football-related activity (administrative, sports or other) at national and international level for a period of six (6) years as from 8 October 2015, in accordance with art. 6 par. 1h) of the FIFA Code of Ethics in conjunction with art. 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Furthermore, Mr Platini shall pay a fine in the amount of CHF 80,000 within 30 days of notification of the present decision.'' ''Joseph S. Blatter is banned from taking part in any football-related activity (administrative, sports or other) at national and international level for a period of six (6) years as from 8 October 2015, in accordance with art. 6 par. 1h) of the FIFA Code of Ethics in conjunction with art. 22 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Mr Blatter shall pay a fine in the amount of CHF 50,000 within 30 days of notification of the present decision.''

Jose Mourinho is close to agreeing on a move to Manchester United. The Portuguese is on the brink of taking over from Louis Van Gaal.

The former Chelsea manager was sacked after a poor start to this season and is already eyeing a return to management with the Old Trafford outfit.

Current Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal is expected to leave the club at the end of this season and Mourinho is ready to take charge of the Premier League giants according to reports from Italy.

The report states that a summer move is on the cards and it is highly unlikely that Van Gaal will be given his marching orders between now and the end of the season.

Manchester United are back in the top four race after a few impressive displays against Liverpool and Stoke City. The Red Devils are fighting Arsenal and Tottenham for the fourth and final Champions League spot from England.

Jose Mourinho has been linked with the Manchester United job ever since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to step down. However, the Portuguese had already accepted an offer from Chelsea back then and the Old Trafford outfit were forced to settle for David Moyes.

With the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp joining Manchester City and Liverpool, this is a golden opportunity for Manchester United to snap up a world class manager as well. Despite his struggles at Chelsea this season, Mourinho is an elite coach and is certainly capable of taking Manchester United back to their former glories.

Mourinho joining United will not go down well with the Stamford Bridge faithful who idolize the Portuguese and were unhappy with his departure earlier this season.

Watford 0-0 Chelsea: 3 major talking points from the Vicarage Road stalemate

Watford 0-0 Chelsea: 3 major talking points from the Vicarage Road stalemate

Watford 0-0 Chelsea: 3 major talking points from the Vicarage Road stalemate - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Watford and Chelsea fought out a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night, in a game that was lively throughout but failed to deliver the end product. Both teams had positives and negatives to take away from their respective performances, as Watford moved up a position to 9th while Chelsea remained in 13th following this result.

Here are 3 major talking points from the game:

1) A game of two halves

Watford were very much in the ascendancy in the first half, with Chelsea sitting far too deep. The Blues’ central midfield pairing of Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel was very defensive indeed, and this allowed the Hornets to come at them all guns blazing. Thibaut Courtois made a couple of good saves to keep the scores level, first from Sebastian Prodl’s header and then from Etienne Capoue’s fierce drive. Odion Ighalo had a great chance to score but the striker mistimed his jump and failed to meet an inch-perfect cross from the left flank.

After the home side failed to take advantage, Chelsea came out looking much more positive in the second period. The two midfielders in the pivot were playing much higher up the pitch, with Matic in particular making some driving runs. Cesc Fabregas found time and space to play balls over the top with regularity, while Oscar was also a constant threat. In the end, Watford also had their goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes to thank, as the Brazilian denied both Oscar and Branislav Ivanovic before keeping out Diego Costa’s header in the final minute.

2) Fabregas runs midfield again, Hazard looks lively after coming on

Chelsea’s stars from last season are slowly but surely returning to form. Fabregas has been the orchestrator of most of the attacking play for his side in the past couple of games and the Spaniard was at it again. The Blues were under immense pressure in the first half, but Fabregas created something out of nothing with his vision and passing range. His ball over the top for Costa was pin-point, and the striker would have scored had it not been for a great saving tackle from Jose Holebas.

The second half saw him come into his own even more, as Watford simply stood off him at times. The former Arsenal man had looked tired and jaded in the first half of the season, but the alleviation of his defensive responsibilities due to Mikel’s inclusion in the team has seen him thrive again.

Eden Hazard came on in the second half and looked encouragingly lively from a Chelsea point-of-view. The Belgian looked like he wanted to take on players, and created a great chance for Ivanovic with a run in behind. He does a bit rusty still, as his first touch when trying to take what could have been a great chance to score late on showed, but there are signs that he is returning to his form of old.

3) Ighalo remains an ever-present threat for Watford

Watford have gone off the boil a bit recently, having won just one game in the Premier League since Boxing Day. They have 33 points to their name at the moment and barring an almighty collapse, Quiqe Sanchez Flores’ side should be good to avoid relegation, which was their target at the start of the campaign.

Their biggest goalscoring threat is undoubtedly Odion Ighalo, who was brilliant again last night. The mercurial Nigerian kept John Terry and Kurt Zouma honest throughout the game, and was a constant threat with his pace. The two defenders were always looking in his direction and it needed their combined efforts to keep him quiet in the end.

Ighalo has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season and doesn’t in any way look like he’s finished.

When will you start taking Leicester City seriously?

When will you start taking Leicester City seriously?

When will you start taking Leicester City seriously? - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

It isn’t often that a team topping the Premier League table on Christmas, and even at the beginning of February, isn’t taken seriously to go on to win the entire thing. Considering that it’s the underdogs — and underdogs to the magnitude that some had them pegged for the club going down this season — who find themselves in the first spot right now, people are still not sure whether the Foxes will have enough in them to go on to win the league. Not so long ago, in late November to be precise, they had another run of tricky fixtures which included matches against Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City. People wrote them off then as well by claiming they had lost against Arsenal, the only top team they had faced till then. Leicester did extremely well even then, only losing narrowly at Anfield. Yet, people claimed that their title bid will end now as they embark upon the three game run against Liverpool (H), Manchester City (A) and Arsenal (A). Ranieri’s men have been written off countless times before and still find themselves on top of the table having successfully crossed the hurdle against the first team they were expected to be below at the start of the season.

A rather comfortable 2-0 win over Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool courtesy of two goals from Jamie Vardy, the opener comfortably being the strongest contender for the goal of the season, has given the side a three point gap on top over Manchester City. While Liverpool have been playing in an underwhelming fashion lately, they are one of the two sides to have beaten Leicester already so were expected to be a test. Ranieri’s men overcame them with such ease, it seemed as though they didn’t take Klopp’s men seriously at all, and rightly so.

Their next two matches are of real worth and ones which could well determine whether they could end up unexpectedly with the coveted Premier League trophy.

Manchester City

On Saturday, they face Manchester City. It is undoubtedly going to be a massive test for the side being led by a manager who knows he is going to be out next season irrespective of what all he ends up with. In such circumstances, one obviously expects Pellegrini to want to finish with the title to not only prove a point to the Manchester City owners but also make a case for employment at other top clubs. City have an absolutely brilliant squad led by a striker who when fit, can do unfixable damage single handedly. Many consider this match to be the title decider. A win over the Manchester side could open a six point gap on top and it might be too much for the Citizens, who are also involved in three other cups. A draw will not be a bad result and will only make the title race more interesting, but will still keep the ball in Leicester’s favor. It’s not going to be a cake walk for the Foxes to get points at the Etihad but they have certainly shown how competent they can be in front, and recently, even at the back. They have only conceded five goals in the last 10 Premier League matches, with two of them coming against Everton back in December. When the goals dried up in front for Ranieri’s men, they tightened up their defence. Things look even more promising for them as Vardy and Mahrez seem to be past their brief dip in form and look menacing once again.

Arsenal FC vs Galatasaray Istanbul

On 14th February, Leicester will travel to London to face their other title challengers Arsenal. After drawing against Southampton, the Gunners find themselves five points behind the league leaders. While many have ruled them out of the title race after last night’s result, a City win or a draw this weekend could put Arsenal back in the mix for the top spot. With Alexis Sanchez back, and other players also returning from injury, the Gunners have a real shot at ending the title drought this season. They have the squad to do the same as well. Leicester’s worst defeat in this campaign came against Wenger’s men but they will find themselves more confident and capable in this reverse fixture. A win at the Emirates and it might be yet another Premier League-less season for the Frenchman.

Leicester City v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

Everything has clicked for Leicester this season. Vardy has repeatedly shown that he is not just having a good run of fixtures, and the fact that he is back from a goal drought shows his potency in front of goal this season. His sublime strike against Liverpool illustrated why he will probably lead the line for England at the Euros this summer. Riyad Mahrez also endured a dip in form but after two great games, looks like he too is back for his side’s most important run of fixtures. He is even better than Vardy, and it is almost certain that he is going to be attempted to be prized away for a lot of money in the summer. Whether the 24-year-old would still want to move away from the King Power Stadium is another matter. N’Golo Kanté offers an astute amount of resilience in the centre of the pitch, Danny Drinkwater is an able anchorman who ticks things forward, Shinji Okazaki can be the flash in the pan every now and then and there are a number of other unsung heroes in the team as well, especially at the back. Ranieri has effectively built a lethal attack and has worked on the side’s defensive solidity as well.

With just 14 games left in the season, Leicester City enjoy another vast advantage, as they’ve played fewer games than their direct rivals, and have yet to play many fewer games. They have been knocked out of all cup competitions, and didn’t have the worry of continental football to begin with, much like Liverpool of 2013/14 season. Their energies can be fixed on one prize and one prize alone. If they can successfully overcome the next two hurdles — and there is no good reason to discount why they cannot — Leicester could become only the second team in the last 20 years (after Blackburn Rovers), to take the Premier League title away from either Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City.
