Arsenal Transfer: 29-old-star star signs long term deal

Arsenal Transfer: 29-old-star star signs long term deal - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has signed a long term contract, the club has confirmed on Tuesday

The 29-year-old has made over 80 league appearances for the Gunners since joining the club in 2013, winning back-to-back FA Cups over the past two seasons.

Initially he struggled to make a strong impact at his new club, and was largely seen as a back-up option for Kieran Gibbs.

However, he has shown significant improvement over the past two seasons, and has become a key player in Arsene Wenger’s back-line this campaign.

The Spaniard has featured in all 22 of Arsenal’s Premier League matches so far in 2015/16, helping the team keep 10 clean sheets along the way.

His assured presence at the back has seen him overcoming competition from Gibbs to snatch his spot at first-choice left-back at the club.

By agreeing fresh terms at Arsenal, Monreal has also closed all doors of returning to his former club Athletic Bilbao, who were set to move for the Spaniard

Relegation battle: Who will go down?

Relegation battle: Who will go down?

Relegation battle: Who will go down? - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

As we take a step back from the mayhem of the January transfer window, let’s take a look at the chances of the teams in and around that dreaded drop zone. Between now and the end of season things are bound to change but nevertheless I have picked out 6 potential candidates that could be playing Championship football next year and will be analysing each of their chances of survival.

Aston Villa:
Now most people have written Villa off and with all due respect I don’t blame them. Sitting bottom of the table on 12 points, Remi Garde has not had a brilliant start to life in the Premier league. His side only recorded one win before their victory last Tuesday against Crystal Palace and are currently 10 points away from 17th placed Swansea City.

Verdict: Sorry to say Villa fans but you better start packing, unless a miracle happens you better wave goodbye to your Premier league status. Yet again don’t get too down-hearted though as I’m sure you’ll be looking forward to facing Midlands rivals Birmingham once again.

Sunderland:
Last season we saw one of the great escapes in Premier League history with Sunderland somehow pulling off an amazing run of form towards the end of the season, can that happen again? I’m not so sure. Players like Jermain Defoe and Yann M’Vila occasionally provide a glimmer of hope for the Black Cats but a nervy backline could cost them.

Verdict: It’s a hard one to call, you never quite know with Sunderland but I think their time is up. A tough run of fixtures in Feburary will most certainly be too tough for Sam Allardyce’s side and he will struggle to pick their confidence back up. It will be tight but I can see Sunderland joining Villa.

Swansea City: Now this is where it starts to get interesting, this time last year Swansea were in the running for a place in the Europa League but are now playing like they’re already down. The 4-2 home defeat to relegation rivals Sunderland was a massive blow. The Welsh side are going through worrying times and in desperate need of a goalscorer.

Verdict: Despite the talent in that Swansea side failing to play to their potential I still believe they will be able to come through and gather some sort of form between now and the end of the season. It won’t be easy but they have not got a bad team at all and as soon as new boss Francesco Guidolin can get his squad of players back on the right track they will be okay.

Newcastle United: Having watched Newcastle’s recent performances they don’t actually look that bad, the only reason they are where they are is because of their rocky patch in October/ November but apart from that most their games have had one goal in it and they have been quite unlucky with decisions and stupid mistakes.

Verdict: This is an easy one for me, Newcatsle United will stay up, all they need to concentrate on doing is finishing off games and staying composed. The signing of Jonjo Shelvey will also be massive as the midfielder excelled in his debut last Saturday and I wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle ended up mid-table.

AFC Bournemouth: This an extremely tough decision to make and it really depends on the outcome of the January transfer window, the Cherries have been the busiest Premier league club with the signings of Benik Afobe, Lewis Grabban and the loan of Juan Iturbe. Bournemouth’s form is a bit hit and miss so we can’t count on that for any evidence.

Verdict: Bournemouth will definitely be scrapping it out down there come May but whether or not they will be relegated is another matter. They have made positive signings which might just be enough to keep them in England’s first division for at least another season.

Norwich City: The Canaries have been at the brunt of quite a few thrashings this season and they don’t look brilliant attacking wise either. Having said that, Alex Neil has done a tremendous job of carving out important results but whether Nowich can pick up wins on regular occasions is a different story.

Verdict: It will be close but I think that Norwich are a few quality players short of a decent premier league team, they will more than likely get promoted back to the league next season but for now I just don’t think that they are strong enough to stay up.

PSG defender: Chelsea star one of the best in Europe

David Luiz says he would welcome Diego Costa to Paris Saint-Germain should the Chelsea striker decide to leave the London club in the future.

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea in 2014 from Atletico Madrid, and scored 20 goals in his first season, leading the Blues to Premier League title last campaign.

This season, however, it has been a different story. He has struggled to replicate last season’s form and has only managed seven goals in 18 league matches so far.

Moreover, his future at Chelsea came under intense speculation following clashes with former manager Jose Mourinho.

With Mourinho gone, Costa seemed to have found his mojo back under Hiddink, having scored five goals in his last five games for Chelsea.

Luiz, a former Chelsea defender, has told the Mirror that he would happily greet the arrival of one of Europe’s top strikers at PSG.

“Diego is one of the most clinical strikers in Europe, he would be a welcome addition to any team,” Luiz said on Monday.

“I think PSG have made their intent clear over the last three or four seasons, that we only add the best players.

“If Diego decides he has had enough of England and wants a new challenge, of course he would be welcome here.”

Luiz further reveals that they enjoy a good camaraderie off the pitch, adding Costa is “one of the nicest guys you can meet”.

Both the players are expected to square off on the football pitch next month, when PSG and Chelsea face each other in the Champions League Round of 16.

Edinson Cavani has reportedly grown frustrated for being regularly used in a wide position, and he is considering his future at PSG due to his role in Blanc’s set-up.

The 28-year-old striker was left out of the starting line-up in PSG’s 1-0 win against Toulouse on Saturday, but he came on as a substitute for Javier Pastore and played in a more orthodox #9 role.

Blanc, however, has stressed that he will not abandon his system to entertain Cavani’s wishes.

“I’m not here to please somebody, I am here to win matches,” he told a media conference.

“At half-time, I changed the system again. They are professional players, they need help of course, but it is the team that is the most important.

“The coach must protect the team. We make choices based on that and not based on each other’s enjoyment.”

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) has covered a big story on Cavani on their front page in Tuesday’s edition, speculating on his potential transfer from the Italian clubs’ perspective.

Juventus and Inter Milan are interested in signing Cavani, but they need to first match the offers from heavyweight Premier League clubs – Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Cavani has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the past two transfer windows.

The Red Devils had reportedly made an approach to sign him on a few occasions in the past, but every time they returned with a negative response from the French champions.

The situation, however, has changed, and PSG might consider selling him this time around should United come up with a good offer.

The Uruguayan has scored 69 goals for PSG since joining the French club in 2013. He is a top class striker and would improve any team in the world.

On the flip side, he turns 29 next month, and is probably past his peak as a striker. Plus, PSG value him at €40m (price quoted by CDS) which could put off any potential investors going forward.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sell the versatile central midfielder Liam Grimshaw to Preston.

The Premier League giants recalled the youngster from his loan spell at Motherwell and have accepted an offer for him from the Championship outfit.

Grimshaw impressed during his loan spell at Motherwell and caught the eye of Preston manager Simon Grayson. The Championship club were keen to secure his services permanently and got in touch with Manchester United last week.

Grimshaw made 16 appearances for the Scottish Premiership side after joining them on loan last September.

Preston have enjoyed an amicable relationship with the Premier League giants having agreed two deals with Manchester United previously. Preston signed Ben Pearson and goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan from Old Trafford earlier this month.

The player has now completed his move to Preston, without making his Premier League debut for Manchester United.

Speaking about Grimshaw, the Preston manager Simon Grayson said: “He is a very versatile player. He can play at right back, he can play on the right side of a three and he can play in midfield. He likes a tackle, has a lot of energy about him and has a good pedigree, because of where he is coming from.”

“He is another young, hungry player that we seem to be developing and attracting. We have some good competition in his area of the pitch and we have some experienced players who will help him on the way.

Furthermore, Grimshaw also confirmed that he is delighted with the move and is looking to take the next step in his career by playing regularly.

He said: “I have been at Manchester United a long time, but I am ready to move on and make a career for myself.

“This is a chance to get my career going. It is great to be back home in Lancashire and I am looking to get settled and start to kick on with my career.”

Liverpool football club have reached an agreement with Belgian club Sint-Truidense regarding the loan move of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues.

The prodigiously talented Brazilian has completed his loan move to Belgium and will continue his development with regular first-team football under his belt.

Liverpool have confirmed the deal on their official website.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined Liverpool during the summer of 2015 after a standout performance at the Frenz International Cup in Indonesia.

The talented Brazilian is yet to obtain a work permit and, therefore, cannot play for Liverpool. However, that should be sorted out after the end of this season and Allan is expected to be a part of the Liverpool squad for next season.

Allan was loaned out immediately after signing for the Reds and the Brazilian joined SJK in Finland.

In eight appearances during his time at SJK, Allan chipped in with two goals and five assists to help the club secure the first league title in their history.
